The 76th Academy Awards (2003) Proved To Be a Lordly Event
The Oscars are fickle in choosing whose mantle or trophy shelf they will reside upon. Some years, all the components of a singular hit run away with the top prizes. Other years, like 2004, are different. The film that took Best Picture and Director, The Lord of the Rings – The Return of the King, did not get a single nomination for acting awards. That did not stop Peter Jackson and company from ruling the night with the highest award count. Still, it did leave many scratching their heads and questioning how the Academy decides their vote.
Still, the award for Best Picture Oscar Award 2003 went to the third in the three-film epic based upon Tolkein’s Masterwork, The Lord of the Rings/The Return of the King. Along with that the film also earned:
Best Art Direction Oscar Award 2003
Best Costume Design Oscar Award 2003
Best Film Editing Oscar Award 2003
Best Make-Up Oscar Award 2003
Best Original Score Oscar Award 2003
Best Original Song Oscar Award 2003
Best Sound Mixing Oscar Award 2003
Best Visual Effects Oscar Award 2003
Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar Award 2003
And, of course, Peter Jackson got a much-deserved Oscar for his role as the film’s director.
Of course, there were other films and other winners. Among them were:
Best Actor Oscar Award 2003 – Sean Penn for Mystic River
Best Actress Oscar Award 2003 – Charlize Theron for Monster
Best Supporting Actor Oscar Award 2003 – Tim Robbins for Mystic River
Best Supporting Actress Oscar Award 2003 – Renee Zellweger for Cold Mountain
Best Cinematography Oscar Award 2003 – Master and Commander of the Far Side of the World
Best Original Screenplay Oscar Award 2003- Lost in Translation — Sofia Coppola
Will there be a runaway winner in this year’s Oscar Race? Or will the Academy pick and choose? We’ll find out soon!
