The 2007 Academy Awards – The Unexpected Happened
The 80th Academy Awards ceremony honoring the best of cinema in 2007 offered up some close-races for coveted awards and a few unexpected winners. The star-studded evening featured memorable face and long, often redundant speeches, but when the stardust had settled, the results were as follows:
Best Picture Academy Award 2007? No Country for Old Men took home the top prize, beating out some fairly stiff competitions including notable films such as: Michael Clayton, Atonement, Juno and There Will Be Blood. The Best Actor Academy Award for 2007 went to Daniel Day Lewis for his role in There Will Be Blood, edging out other notables like: George Clooney, Johnny Depp and Viggo Mortensen. The Best Actress Academy Award 2007 nod went to Marion Cotillard for her portrayal of Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose, and came as a bit of shock to many who’d predicted that Cate Blanchette’s Elizabeth would reign supreme.
Other notable Oscar winners for 2007 included:
Best Actor in Supporting Role Oscar Award 2007 –Javier Bardem for No Country for Old Men
Best Actress in Supporting Role Oscar Award 2007– Tilda Swenton for Michael Clayton
Best Cinematography Oscar Award 2007– Robert Elswit forThere will be Blood
Best Art Direction Oscar Award 2007– Dante Ferretti and Francesca Lo Schiavo for Sweeney Todd-The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Best Original Score Oscar Award 2007– Dario Marianelli for Atonement

Best Writing (Original Screenplay) Oscar Award 2007–Diablo Cody for Juno
Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay) Oscar Award 2007–Joel and Ethan Coen for No Country for Old Men
It was a year where a couple of films that were heavily nominated received less attention than many expected, but such is often the way of the Oscars. Since this is a ceremony where the pros honor their own, the movie-viewing public will just have to wait and see what sorts of surprises the Academy will present to us for 2010.
