69th Academy Awards – The Year of the Independents

So was named the 69th Academy Awards due to low budget independent films dominating the show and also the award for Best Picture. This was Billy Crystal’s fifth time hosting the Oscars. Another high point of the evening was The English Patient’s nine wins out of twelve nominations.

Best Adapted Screenplay Academy/Oscar Award 1997: Sling Blade

Best Foreign Language Film Academy/Oscar Award 1997: Kolya (Czech Republic)

Even though the show had some great wins it, viewers suffered a great disappointment as predicted Lauren Bacall did not win an Oscar.
